Distress…

September 20, 2008

Friday is a day to distress, I decided not to go for lesson for once, and head on for dinner with Xiubin, Elaine, Ronald and Xuewen. We went to a Hong Kong’s cafe, Kim Gary. Dine in there, had lots of craps and went walking around Vivo. Ronald suggests to have some fun in the arcade, so we went. We played shooting basketball, my favourite and we played a match of four for this table game. Ronald and I lost to Xuewen and Elaine. lol. A kind of my way to distress.

Feeling rather nervous for next week, Boss is coming back and I am going to meet her for the first time, plus, I have to transfer to export to learn. I’M TOTALLY NERVOUS AND SCARED. But somehow I’m trying to convince myself that I have to learn export one day, why not learn asap? BE POSITIVE.

Was talking to Mas on the phone for two hours last night and we shared alot about our SIP, feeling relax taking to her. hehe.

hungry…

September 18, 2008

I have not been eating for the whole day, and I’m not feeling hungry. I do feel hungry at times during work, but due to too much work load, I soon forget that I’m hungry. lol. Amazing… And now back at home, I’m still not eating anything yet. Something is wrong, let’s see what happens tomorrow, maybe tomorrow I will go eat like crazy. But I never had such day before, not eating at all, not as if I’m on diet. Hahas.

at work.

September 18, 2008

For the passed whole week of work, Daniel is listening Power 98, and I keep hearing ‘The man who can’t be moved’. Two weeks of just listening to that song, I just didn’t switch to the next song. At work this week, I made a mistake on Tradenet, was doing 4 permits at a go last Friday, and one of the permits, I missed out a number of the container number, $50 was fined on to the company. The case didn’t just closed like this, before we could cancel the permit and send another new one, the haulier truck out the container, I have no idea how did he do that but it supposed to be impossible. So now, the haulier’s company trying to file us a complaint, but we are trying to arrow back to them with their fault of not waiting for the new permit to be sent over. It is not exactly our fault, but in the first place if I didn’t have made the mistake, then it wouldn’t have started. Anyway, Daniel or Jessie said that they would take up the case when Emily, my boss returns. But I guessed, after the case is closed I will tell them not to do that. I will feel terrible. In the first place, two of them have been REAL NICE to me, and I would really appreciate that they let me to take up the responsibility of such mistake, or else I will never learn my lesson. I really owe them, seriously, I learnt a lot from them, not just on operation procedure but how to deal with matters and people. And today, this lady called Josephine, a senior of Daniel, told me that Daniel is the nicest person she ever met in her entire working life. She said that in the working life, many people will tend to ‘don’t care about others’ business’ but not for Daniel, which I think is very true, he has been very helpful, giving me advices on many issues, whatever he can teach, he will teach me. He deserves my respect. I just hope I can faster get rid of my forgetfulness. Daniel find that I’m more alert when comes to relate to numbers, I was like opps.,  but not on container number. Haha. But if I know how to double check before I go and send the permits, I guessed I wouldn’t have made that silly dumb mistake. But of course, this matter didn’t affect me much, I was just thinking how to talk to Daniel and Jessie about wanting to take the blame for me. Seriously, they have no obligation to do such things for me. Now I know so much things, but well, those that I can remember is 50% of what Daniel and Jessie taught me so far. I’m ashamed, but I’ll try harder! This week passed very fast and now is already Thursday, and I will be learning Export from my other collegues next week. Oh man, i’m kinda of scared, cause I know they are not as patience as Daniel and Jessie, but I believe they are alright people. But actually, my supervisor I don’t know how he plan, I’m in Import for only two weeks, then jump to Export for two weeks, then after that, the rest of my eight weeks how? I hope when my boss comes back, she might change her plan to do extend my stay in Import longer, so that I can learn more and more detailed. I pray hard at least I can stay for two more weeks? Pray harder…

My Reflection for first week.

September 14, 2008

I started work on Wednesday and was posted to ICC department or Danmar Lines (LCL), which is doing consolidation of cargoes for both Import and Export. For the first two weeks, as I was told that I will be learning on Import Consolidation from two of my colleagues, Jessie and Daniel. On my first day at work, I read through Quality ISO’s documents that are meant for auditing purposes and a copy of operation chart was given to me by my colleague, Din, who further explained to me how is our department being divided into. Later in the day, Daniel explained further about what each individual department in Ocean Freight is doing and what exactly our department, ICC is doing. This concludes my first day at work.

On Thursday, I learnt how to tally an Out-turn Report with the Import Manifest given to us. Normally, after the cargoes are sent to our warehouse in Keppel Distripark, the warehouse’s personnel, would record down the description of the cargoes arrived, into a Out-turn Report. After which, they would send this report to us, to tally with the Import Manifest that we have. So, I did a couple of cases on tallying the report with the Import Manifest.

On the same day, I started learning how to use Logis Ocean, a system that is commonly used in our company. I learnt how to search for the correct Master file and Z-files to change the necessary information.

Last day of the week, a very commonly used website, Portnet was introduced to me. Portnet, which is run by the PSA, with all the information about the vessels coming into Singapore, such as Estimated Time of Berthing (ETB), berthing number andberthing location. Beside that, there are information on how dangerous are the cargoes which can be found under Dangerous Goods (DG) Services enquiry. Stated in the Import Manifest, we can use the given UN number to search on Portnet which class is the cargo categorized under, from Class 1 to 3 (Class 1 being the most dangerous to Class 3 being the least dangerous).

Based on what I have learnt on Thursday, my colleague, Daniel went through a case on Import consolidation with me. From the start of finding the Master file, Z-files and checking all the details of the vessels, cargoes and Master Bill of Lading’s (M B/L) number to printing out of various documents such as Delivery Order, Arrival Notice, Job Instruction Form and House Bill of Lading (House B/L). There were many documents and I was confused with the steps to complete the whole procedure of Import Consolidation. Then, I had to file in all the relevant documents into our own Import file for further follow-ups. I have learnt from both of my colleagues that we have to always keep important documents such as Master B/L, Delivery Order and relevant e-mail’s attached documents that were sent to us by any parties involved. These are to keep as references or evidences which help to clarify any disputes in the future.

Lastly, I did Cargoes Clearance Permit via Tradenet. I did learnt Tradenet in my polytechnic, but it was only a brief introduction of Tradenet and a practice on creating import’s order. As a ICC personnel, we are supposed to do permits for cargoes. Any cargoes that are going to either Pasir Panjang Port or Jurong Port, we must do permits via Tradenet. I did four cases that are going to Pasir Panjang Port. Two of the cases that I did were from the same vessels but different cargoes, so I was confused whether I did it correctly. Luckily, with the help of my colleague, Jessie, I managed to sort out the problem.

To conclude for the whole week, I have realized whatever that I have learnt in my polytechnic is not as easy I have first thought it was. Theoretically, it is easy, but when I start learning the hands-on at work, it is rather difficult and hard to remember all at one go. However, like what my colleagues told me, after doing it for a few more times I would eventually remember the procedures.

__________________________________________________________________________

I guessed I wrote a bit too long for a first week, Xuewen told me he didn’t write alot, only until the top of the 2nd page in the logbook. Opps, mine is like whole full pages, shit. I scared I have a lot of silly mistakes like grammar or write wrong information, hahas. Cause my LO (Liaison Officer) told me to write more detailed because of my boss, Emily. Opps, I hope she is approve after reading my reflection. hahas.

Wondering what’s on MONDAY?

September 13, 2008

On the first day of my work, before lunch, I did nothing but looking through ISO Quality documents, but my colleague, Din shown me around my department, ICC or Danmar Lines.  Including me, there are nine people in the department, pretty small compare to Xiubin’s export dept and Xuewen’s import dept. Both my Boss and supervisor are not here during my first day, so all my colleagues were shocked to see me and they didn’t know what to do. lol. Din was very nice to photocopy a copy of operation chart and explain to me what it is, despite being busy himself, he still concerned about whether I’m bored a not. After lunch, Daniel talked to me about the whole thing about Ocean Freight which includes Import, Export and ICC, for entire 3 hours till 6 p.m. Wow… I felt so much better aleast I know better now, and I’m really grateful to both of them, because the reality of working life is cruel and to have people being so friendly and willing to help you is really a blessing. I have colleagues that just simply ignored me but I think I just take it easy. Entire 3 hours, half of what Daniel said, I must be honest I was still in confusion, but second day of work explained what he was trying to get through me.

At last, I met Alfred, my supervisor, a quiet man. He passed me some more Quality documents to read through, so that is how I spend my before-lunch time on second day, I wasn’t feeling bored, caused I changed my desk position to beside Daniel, behind me were Jessie and Alfred and infront was Din. Changing of desk position was just as I wished for on my first day. Because the first day I sat beside Eugene and infront of me were Hooi chen and Fong who were not very friendly to me, especially Eugene, and there was this Malay colleague called Fazi, who I think she is really fierce.  Alfred told me that for the first 2 weeks, I will be with Daniel and Jessie to learn on import consolidation and then following I will go to other colleagues, I’m scared of Fazi, but she is really steady and efficient employee, hope I can learn from her.

Actually I think Alfred also don’t know what to do with me, hahas, because I think Emily, my boss is the one that is suppose to give me task. Talking about Emily, I have been hearing bad things about her for the passed three days, because of her non-present in the company, my colleagues were randomly asking her to ******…. not nice stuff to hear. Then after lunch, Jessie, a very nice lady, patiently teaching me the system Logis Ocean, doing consolidation. She was really very nice despite being new in the company, and she has to learn about export too. I’m really grateful and blessed.

Friday comes and it is the most satisfactory day, as I learnt how to use Portnet, Tradenet and Logis Ocean. Jessie taught me how to use the Portnet to see whether the cargoes contain dangerous goods with classes and how to check when are the vessels berthing and whether there are such vessels berthing in Singapore, stated on the documents provided by the carriers. Then Daniel go through with me on a case for consolidations, the whole procedure of the import consolidation was really tedious and hard to remember, with all the documents laying on my tables, it was in a mess. hahas.

After lunch, the whole world seems to be looking for Daniel and I can tell that I’m delaying his work process, because it is friday, and meaning tml there is no work, but vessels are still berthing, so he still have to a lot of work to do. However, he still teach me how to do tradenet, carogoes clearance permit. Then I did four cases for tradenet permit for cargoes going to Pasir Panjang Port. The day was fruitful, but I felt guilty making Daniel so much work to do, and when I went off, he was still there doing his work. I’m so sorry. :( Nonetheless, I learnt a lot from them, though still blur.

To tell a little secret, though everyone is looking not looking forward to next Monday, I’M! lol. I can’t wait to faster learn everything, and work on my own, or else everything must trouble Daniel and Jessie. It is not their obligation to teach me, but they did. I can really feel their sincerity of wanting to teach me. Oh, I never mentioned, Daniel was from my course, LOM, he grauduated during 2004. And while I was doing the Cargoes Clearance Permit, he told me he always trust that TP LOM people sure can do it. I hope I wouldn’t disappoint him, and he asked me not to disappoint Mr. Koh, knowing that Mr. Koh is my Care person. lol. We talked about each lecturer in LOM. hahas.

And also, from my table, I can see the PSA Port, which makes me feel great, I don’t know why. Wooo… I’m loving my job for now, for the future I’m uncertain. I better learn fast! Yea.
